I use too until I toasted a valve and had to sell it.  I wish I never did.  The only thing that feels and sounds like an s38 is an s38.

The E28 M5 is the car that turned me into a car nut.  My Dad had one...he got it used when I was 13 or so, baaaaack in the day.  He wanted to sell it countless time because it would cost him 2gs every year just to keep it in good running order but I made him keep it because I loved it so much.  He took it to Bridgehampton a few times when I was 16 and again when I was 17 (still too young to even go for a ride I was told) and its there that I realized I would be destined to a life full of wasting time, making noise, wasting precious resources, trying to avoid death at the track.....but smiling my a$$ off.

At 16 I was autocrossing the E28 (it had a Dinan chip, Bilsteins and springs because the self levelling suspension (which was awesome) crapped out and no one knew how to fix it).  I would give the stock e36s a run for their money.

At 17 I was destroying Mustangs and Intergras on the Blvd.  (Franny Lew)...   the street racing Blvd. of choice where I grew up in Queens.  man did I love sh1tting on those Mustangs in my ugly four door BMW.  I still love sh1tting on Mustangs.

I would run against my cousin in his fancy Dakar II 4dr e36 and we would be neck and neck to 120.  OP, you're right, nothing sounds and feels like the S38 did.

It ran strong but developed a 3in crack in the strut tower and a bigger one on the firewall which my Dad blamed on me Auto-xing it too much, and which I blamed on his 100,000mi of NYC streets.  He sold it at 160K because his mechanic told him it would be time for a timing chain soon and he didnt want to put up with it any longer.  When I came home from college and he said he had sold it, I didn't talk to him for a week.

A few years later, I took my 2003 330ci (black on tan like the M5 of course) to Summit Point, where I saw one!  An older guy had a stripped out e28 m5 with a cage and big fat RA1s.  I asked him for a ride and almost started crying when he said yes.....just to relive being in that car and listening to that motor and feeling it almost made my head explode.  The guy thought I was nuts as he explained to me that because of its weight it really was not an ideal track car, but I wasn't listening to him...

Im gonna buy another one, one of these days, and its going to be awesome.

My car was a beast.  All it had done to the engine was a ram air intake and a chip.  That being said I could pull e46 m3's and s4's with it.  I put a set of e34 m5 brakes on the front and back with massive rotors.  Only my 17 inch wheels would fit.  When I would brake hard the horn would depress (HONK!) that was when you turned in.  I do not know how to post pics on this board but I have a ton.  The e28 m5 makes an awesome track car you just have to know how to set it u,.  like this

Yeah, I saw that video, its amazing.  I forgot that guy's name but he was selling that car on ebay along with a gorgeous race prepped e30 M3, a Ford dually truck and a rediculous trailer all for $50gs.  I don't know if he ever sold it, but the pictures on the ebay ad of that M5 were amazing.

That is an awesome video.

While I agree that the old e28 M5 was awesome, I don't think it could pull on an E46 M3.  Maybe yours was special.

Mine had a Dinan chip good for about 40hp max power increase  (and it made the power much more linear than stock).

We also had 750il front control arm bushings which tightened up the front end, and 750il brake rotors beacuse the stock ones would warp every few months...   even the fatter 750il ones would warp.  The E34 brakes were probably the way to go.

I would love to get my hands on a euro spec car one of these days, with the different size headlights, short bumpers and no front of rear spoilers..  a true sleeper.
